Our local feed store has been around for almost 100 years. In addition to feed, it sells vegetable seed, maple syruping supplies, and locally produced honey, syrup, and soaps... plus these fabulous old-time hard candies by Claey's -- lemon, apple, horehound, etc. for $1.50 a bag! My kids saved up their money and asked me to go buy several bags for them today. I needed more pine shavings anyway, so I went. The owner boxed up the kids' candy in the original shipping box, and look what somehow made it into the box:

I just can't figure out how that happened. Guess I'll keep her!

Oh I am totally going to use that excuse the next time I go to the store and want to come home with a cute chick. Sorry honey, I have no idea how it got in there but now we will just have to keep it.

She's a little Barred Rock pullet. She is just the sweetest little thing! She loved cuddling in my hands, and in my two middle sons' hands, and when I put her in the brooder with our 1-week-old and 2-week-old Marans chicks, only one quickly pecked her, and the next thing I know, they arranged themselves around her protectively (that's her with the big cream spot on her head, by the waterer) and in a few minutes, they were all fast asleep!
