I have a flock of laying hens, roosters, chicks and juveniles. They all free range all day. I worry about putting out laying feed because I don't want the little ones to get to it and I worry about the little guys not getting enough of what they need as well. What's a good feed to put out for them to eat when they aren't finding what they need while they free range that would be safe and nutritious for everyone to eat?

For a flock of mixed genders and ages, I'd recommend an "all flock" feed. Purina makes one called "Flock Raiser" and other companies make something similar. "All flock" feeds are usually 18 to 20% protein, and low in calcium, so you'll need to provide a calcium source (e.g., crushed oyster shell) separately. An all-flock feed is nice for chicks, who can be harmed by the high calcium content in layer feed.

If you looking for an organic non-GMO feed, Nature's Best Organic Chick Starter is a nice option. I feed that to my entire flock (roosters, hens, pullets, chicks) year-round. Even though it's marketed as "chick starter", I use it as an "all flock" feed.

I feed to the highest common denominator. If I have young ones, i'll feed everyone what they need and offer oyster shell free choice. The extra protein won't hurt older birds and if you're concerned about it you can offer them lower protein treats. I don't like to use a layer until all are laying. I start my chicks on a 22% protein 1% calcium starter for 3-4 weeks, then move them to a grower/broiler 18%, still 1% calcium, until they lay. Then I'll move them to a low calcium layer (5%) calcium. I know this will shorten my rooster's longevity, but since they only get to stay in the flock for two years its not a significant issue.
