Hi all,
I have several questions today
I am planning on a coop construction and would like a few advices.
I want egg layers and meat chicken. My plan was to build a single coop, but divided into two completely separate "rooms".
In one room, I plan on having the egg laying chicken and a rooster.
In room #2, I plan on having a warm place to hatch the eggs and grow chicken for the meat.
Is it OK to keep the rooster with the chicks? I've read that they can be aggressive towards the chicks, but also towards the person that cleans the coop. Should I think about building a room just for him? How will I manage cleaning the place if he is aggressive and I can't separate him from the others? And I am guessing that I can eat the eggs OR (since I have a rooster) take the eggs in the incubator and hatch them, that's right?
For my room #2, I plan on hatching the eggs in my house and keep them indoors for 1 week. Then I would bring them to their warm room in the coop.
In several posts, I read that meat chicken are less active? Is that true? Would they require a different coop setup than the egg layers? Do they roost? I am thinking of going with the most typical breed for meat, not too sure which breed I will be able to find in Quebec. I am thinking cornish, if I find them!
LAST QUESTION
IF I have a fences area to let them run, dig, sandbath, etc., does the pen need to be separated for the egg layers versus the meat birds?
Note: I still haven't decided on the breed for the egg layers. I like the easter eggers, leghorn, bantam-cochin, but I am not sure which one I will find here!
Thanks for your help and advices.
