I'm getting my first chicks in April 2021, and have decided to do a mixed flock so I could tell my chooks apart easier.
I'm getting a total of 9 chicks (maybe one more ❤), with 5 being bantams and the other 4 LF. (I'll be ordering off of Meyer Hatchery).
I have taken a very long time to compare breeds and temperaments, and tried to create a great flock that'll get along well while being docile with me.
LF:
· 1 Buff Orpington
· 1 Green Queen
· 1 Olive Egger
· 1 Black Australorp
Bantams:
· 1 Blue/Black/Splash Silkie
· 1 Buff Silkie
· 1 Mottled Cochin
· 1 Black Frizzle Cochin
· 1 Buff Brahma

I also have decided to get a Barred Plymouth Rock but am unsure if I should get the bantam breed or standard. Please tell me what you think :jumpy

Also, are there any flock owners out there who've had a mixed flock of Bantams & Standards?

Lastly, feel free to wright a review on any of the breeds I'm getting and predictions if this flock will get along!

Thank you for your time!!

Sometimes you just have to be careful with mixed sized roosters. Bantam hens and standard roosters don’t mix well and vice versa

Alright, good to know!
I might be getting more than one rooster from my bantam choices so my plan is to choose the best rooster and sell the others for cheap. Definitely wont have a standard rooster with the bantams.

If they are raised together they will probably get along. The main problem you may have is if there is a LF rooster trying to mate with the bantams, he could hurt them.
Buff Orpington: So many people’s favorites because of their personality. I have one and she’s so sweet! They also get along with other chickens really well I’ve noticed.

Green Queen:My best friend has EE and green queens are a type of EE, they are so pretty!

Olive egger: Their eggs are so pretty! Mine is really flighty, but I only have one so maybe you will have better luck.

I’ve never had a black australorp but I have heard so many people say they absolutely love them.

Silkies: They are so soft and they are very sweet! I don’t have one now, but I used to have some and I loved them. I had roosters and hens and they were very sweet!

Cochins: They are the perfect chicken, feathered feet, one of the best personalities, super fluffy, and they seem to love to cuddle. I had one, she just passed away but they are one of my favorites.

I have never had a Brahma but they seem like good chickens.

I’ve always had LF Barred Rocks and I just love them! It really depends on whether you like big or small chickens. Also are you planning on it being a boy or a girl? If your getting a boy you should probably get a bantam rooster.

@JadeFarms Thank you for replying! That helps so much! I feel much more confident in my choices!

I've heard that Buff Orpingtons are the Golden Retrievers of the chicken world!

I am getting a Green Queen for their beards and muffs, they look like chipmunks! lol

I hope I get lucky with the Olive Eggers temperament! I want to get them for their pretty olive eggs and i need a good layer sense i'm getting lots of bantams. The brooder will be outside in a shed, but i will be in there constantly, spending as much time as i can with them.

I have a neighbor who had many black Australorps, and i have never heard them! I choose them for their amazing laying ability, cold hardiness, and super quiet voice!

I've heard a Silkies feathers feel like dog fur! With their kid-friendly disposition, i can't wait to see what they're like!

There is lots of debate in the chicken world as to Cochins v.s Brahmas. I would get standard sized but they are too big for the setup i have. I can't wait to find out myself which one is the best! (Also I'll have no problem snugglin' chickens! lol)

I definitely wont be getting a male on purpose (But there is a very good chance I'll at least get two accidentally from the bantams). I love the Barred Plymouth Rocks laying but also heard they are very friendly. I wouldn't care if i got the Bantam or Standard. So hard to choose between the two!!
Do your standard Barred Plymouth Rocks get along well in your flock?

Do your standard Barred Plymouth Rocks get along well in your flock?
Yes they do! They remind me a little bit of buff Orpingtons in personality because they are super sweet! They are sometimes hard to sex because they don’t always end up being what they were supposed to and they can sometimes have large crowns even though they are girls.

When they are about six weeks, I will be happy to tell you if they are probably a girl or a boy.

Awesome! I'll definitely contact you about that next year! One of my friends will also be getting one so if she's having trouble I'll show hers as well! 😊

There are different olive egger mixes. And it might just be the breeds mine is mixed with because some are flightier than others. Some people do a legbar mix (that’s what mine is) and some people do ameraucana mixes. A lot of the times they do a ameraucana or sometimes an EE with a welsummer or a maran. I’m actually hoping to make my own olive Egger. Because olive Eggers are very pretty chickens. Do you know if yours is going to be a legbar mix or an ameraucana mix?

Sadly, no.. Meyer Hatchery uses a variety of parent breeds to create several different strains and you're sadly not allowed to choose the breeding program so i guess it'll be a surprise!
