One the the Black Stars, called Blackie because I’m real thoughtful with names, has been doing a moaning like squawk today. Is this her saying, “something’s going on inside me, and I don’t know what it is!”? She began to check out the nest box, and just as I started typing this, she sat in it and got quiet. I think I might be getting a first egg from her today.

Mine get super vocal before they start laying. I don't know if I'd call it moaning, more like an "aaaaaaAAAAAARRRGGGHHHHHH!" Going quiet in the nest box is definitely go time. Blackie the Black Star's eggs are imminent!

Blackie the Black Star laid her first egg.

That makes Blackie the Black Star, Brownie the Black Star, Blondie the Ideal 236, and Queenie the Ideal 236 all egg layers now. Four of the six birds. Buffy the Buff Plymouth Rock and Dottie the Wyandotte still have yet to begin laying.
