Mobile henhouse/ Eggmobile?

That's what I did. I LOVE it. It's huge, provides great shade, and was a piece of cake to make. My chickens only use it during the daytime. I put them back in their permanent coop at night.

WOW!

That is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen. I would have never thought the use my trampoline like that. I am very impressed, I'm doing that as soon as the weather warms up. Did you just use chicken wire and zip ties?

Carla,
Thanks so much for the details of the large eggmobile... tommorrow was supposed to be first day for us to work on the henhouse, but with all the rain, we may have to just work on the design... I really appreciate your explanation...

I am considering getting chickens for our backyard. We have 2 acres and don't do anything with it. I have been looking at chicken tractor models, dog house plans and just can't seem to find anyting to match my VERY primative construction skills. I want to make sure my new brood is protected from the many creatures that are lurking. We had wild ducks on our small pond last summer, and they mysteriously disappeared before growing wing feathers. Do you think I can electrify the chicken wire with jumper cables and a car battery?

Anybody have trouble with critters getting in to a basic tractor type houseing model. ? For the warm months I'd like to keep them around the yard.

I plan to remodel half of our large garden shed to a coop, it has cement floor and pretty solid block foundation. It was a coop at one time, still has the door.

For your safety, and the safety of every living creature that could come in contact with that car battery and jumper cables - please - do not - hook up something like that. You'd really be in very serious danger of fatal injury!

If you live somewhat close to a larger city, try checking the free site on Craigslist. We are near Portland Oregon and I have actually seen a trampoline on the site.......to bad I found this place 3 weeks later! lol

I know the car battery is a bad idea. I am just looking for suggestions that have worked for others. I have a dog, but she is mostly an indoor dweller. My cat has no claws, not that that stops him.(he adopted us and arrived at the door that way) I read about constructing yards by burying the fencing 12inches below the ground. That would not be mobile, however.

You're not likley to get much of a jolt out of a car battery. 12 volts can barley be felt unless it's against wet bare skin. however, you can still start a fire or melt things with a short circuit. I'm thinking of using either a battery operated, or solar electric fence charger. Use the chicken wire as the ground and run a hot wire on insulators attached to the outside perimter. Fence chargers put out between 5000 to 15000 volt at low amperage for a short duration and will definatly keep most preditors thinking twice about getting in. Non-lethal, but they work great. Except on goats.

I think the "Electrifried Chicken Tractor" will be my next project. Battery operated fence chargers can be had for less than $100, so that is the route I'm going to go. The neighborhod dogs have already been introduced to my perimeter electric fences with good results. The mules also chased a coyote into the fence where he got tangled up in the hot wire and had the shock of his life. Between the guard mules, which will go out of their way to stomp dogs and an electric chicken tractor, I feel pretty good about the girls safety. I'll let you all know how all this comes together when it gets done.
