Hey all,
I live in western NC so our winters are not too bad but it does snow a few times a year and gets cold but seeing 20's is really cold for us. The summers get hot but again mid or upper 90's is really hot......
I am building a mobile hoop coop based off this one by Walter Jeffries http://flashweb.com/blog/2009/03/chicken-hoop-house.html
They us cattle panels covered with foil bubble bubble foil insulation for coolness/warmth.
I plan on using it year round....dont want it too hot in summer or too cool in winter. I raise Barred rocks so they do fine with cold in general. I am using a rotational paddock system with them so they get moved every 7 ish days.....
I guees my questions for folks in this vacinity is what you do for winter? do you continue to let them out all year? coop em a couple months?
Walter puts his up on bales for winter and uses deep bedding.....I really like that idea except for then in order to go out they basically have a yard which will be destroyed by spring. Does anyone contiue their rotation during winter?
If cooping them for say 90 days is what i decide I am curious about venting it. Was thing a roof over hand and then maybe a 4 inch opening across the tops on the front and back along the hoop.
Just seems like everyone i find doing this is in a much colder climate.....
Thanks
