Modern Game Bantam - Proper Protein Requirements??

Moderns are basically no different than any other chicken if you are just keeping them around. Any commercial grade ration will be just fine.

If you are breeding them right now then I would use a little higher protein feed. I use a 20% game bird layer as my basic feed for breeding and conditioning for show. Once or twice a week I will feed soaked whole oats to help make them lay and it also hardens the feather quality for the show room.

As a starter I have used a 28% medicated feed for a long time because I also have peacocks and guineas. But I have recently gone to a 20% starter because my moderns were getting a little long in feather because of the high protein.

Good luck
Bob

Thanks for the info. Is whole oats something I can get in the supermarket or do I have to go to a feed store? I will be showing these birds and hopefully breeding them. I feed them purina game bird breeder right now which is 20% protein.

Whole oats need to be purchased at you local feed mill. You need to soak them over night minimum. Some prefer to soak them until they ferment, but the smell is pretty bad! If you are interested in mixing your own feed, I have a calculating program on my website . It will calculate the protein, and fat levels.

Thanks so much Cuda. Your website is very nice. Lots of info. I was especially interested in the dubbing section. Thanks for the lesson!

No problem, glad to help.
