It's not thier total diet. They still forage for a good bit of their food in winter. I also plant mustards, turnips and other winter crops that they eat. There isn't much but what table scraps I have, they get. I also buy 1 bag of all flock for each 3 bags of fish pellets, just to make sure that if there is some mystery mineral or vitamin that is not in the fish feed, it will be provided with the bird feed. Now, during the summer, I throw 5 gals of all flock out all over the yard every morning and another 5 about 2 hours before dark. In winter, i mix 3 gals fish to1 gal bird. They get a total of 8 gals/day for about 100 birds. I throw it all over the ground so it teaches them to hunt out food. I don't want them to ever get to be lazy trough feeders. In moderation, sure, but as a total diet?
We're lucky down here. There are catfish, bass, bream, talapia and even some prawn shrimp farms all around. There's plenty of good free fishing in the rivers and creeks, but if you want to catch a freezer full in a day, all you gotta do is pay a little at one of the private fish farm/lakes. Helluva lot cheaper than store bought. And better quality than you can buy from stores selling the Chinese/turd world country sewage lagoon fish.So it's not a total diet, and does well. Nice! No catfish farms up here though, and fish pellets by the big bag nearly never seen.
