Hey guys, I have a 4-year-old Black Australorp, and I am concerned about her current molt. She started shedding feathers a couple days ago, and now has two completely bare patches on her back. I've never seen a molt like this, and am wondering if there is any reason for concern. Just a side note, she recently went through about a week of brooding, which ended about a week before the molt began. She seems fine as far as energy, appetite, etc.

Thanks for any advice and/or reassurance.

If she's acting normal and not lethargic, I don't think there is reason for concern. It may be a bit early but molt has to happen every autumn. The earlier than molt is likely due to her being broody for a time.
Where are you located?

She was broody for a week? Did you break her?

Was she separated from the flock during brooding?

Was she wearing a hen saddle?

Pattern of loss looks a lot like loss due to being mated/mounted. I do see new pin feathers emerging, so perhaps she's going through a mini molt due to coming out being broody.

I agree, it's not something I'd worry about too much if she's active, eating/drinking, etc.
