How wonderful there is a place for us chicken lovers to get good how to's and swap stories! We mail ordered our chicks. We asked for15 and ended up with 22. My only concern is as they become full grown, is our coop big enough? We converted a big metal shed into a coop. 10x12.I feel we should add another one. I know they roost at night so I did make plenty of roosting and nesting. Their let out of the coop early tho. What say you all. Do we need another add-on coop?

Rule of thumb is to allow 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop (excluding nest boxes and roosts) and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run. You will probably get some cockerels as your extra birds, that is what hatcheries like to do - it helps get rid of excess birds and it seems like the customer is getting a bonus. Plus they are not 100% accurate about sending pullets.

Welcome to BYC!

x2 on drumstick diva's response. It's better to have too much space than too little to avoid the stresses that come with overcrowding. Expecting 15 and getting 22 was almost too much of a good thing I'm thinking, lol.

It's nice to have you here!

I have 3 chickens hope for more hatch soon just received our incubator. I say you are fine if you have them for meat or sell them and don't hatch too many.
