My hen had sour crop which I discovered on a Sunday afternoon. Afer reading these posts I went to the store and bought Monistat. She was worse on Monday. I rushed her to the vet when I got home that evening and she couldn't even hold her head up. The vet gave her all sorts of fluids and medicines. The vet told me that the Monistat contains propylene glycol which is toxic to birds. My hen died this morning at the vet. My other hen is showing similar symptoms and the vet told me to NOT give her Monistat, but to bring her in immediately. I followed the advice of people on here regarding Monistat and my bird is dead. People need to know this is not a cure, it is a way to kill them. Always call a vet before giving your bird any medicine. If I had, my bird might still be alive.

Did the vet say how it was toxic to chickens? Like, are they more sensitive to it than other animals? Not arguing, just curious. Propylene glycol is in everything from crackers to flea meds to antifreeze.

If Monistat has been working for sour crop then maybe a better approach would be finding the part of the product that is actually doing the work and skipping the rest... like when people use toothpaste on acne, it's the alcohol and baking soda doing the work, so just use those instead of the toothpaste.

Nystatin, which is an approved antifungal agent, is readily available on-line. Monistat is a "use in a pinch" method of dealing with a fungal infection. Most of us would use the Nystatin, but there are times when you must work with what you have available.

I am sorry about your bird, but I find it hard to believe her COD was the Monistat. It was more likely the crop issues that killed her. Monistat has been used for years by many, many poultry keepers. I think that this information would have come to light much sooner than now if Monistat was so toxic as to cause death.

Perhaps you should do a poll. Ask how many keepers have used the Monistat, whether the medication was effective, and whether the bird survived the treatment or not.

I used Monistat 3 suppositories on my hen for a sour crop. According to the ingredient list, the only propylene glycol is in the external anti-itch cream, not in the suppository. I certainly did not use the anti-itch cream on her. Hen is still alive and well. Propylene Glycol is know to be toxic to cats, but is otherwise used in dog treats as well as some bird treats as well.

I treated my chicken with monistat as a last result about 2 weeks ago. I had tried everything and she just wasn't getting better. Thought it was worth a try. She made a beautiful recovery. I thought it might turn into pendulous crop because her crop had been so stretched out for so long, but she is completely recovered.
Here is the thing: She hasn't laid an egg since. She is a terrific layer and had been laying all the way through her bout of sour crop, even when she could barely breath she was still laying. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas?

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to hopefully clear up this confusion. From what I've read up on, propylene glycol is not dangerous. Ethylene glycol is the poisonous chemical. Monistat, at least in the U.S., doesn't contain ethylene glycol and is safe to treat sour crop in appropriate dosage. Just double check the ingredients list for other brands of yeast infection creams/suppositories and it should not cause any issues.

I am very new to having chickens. I have 3 silkies. I’m confused with reading about Monistat use to treat crop. This is a suppository for humans. I’m reading it was feed in very small pieces to chickens. Is that correct???

My little hen has sour crop and I have tried everything. She started to do the head roll on Saturday and now on Thursday still has it. I have given her mineral oil in a syringe and it did not really make a difference. The Monistat pills are not available here in Canada anymore. Just the ovule. So I bought that and opened it up and gave her some last night. She is still alive! There is no Ethylene glycol in the ovules.
