New poster/member - thanks for any support.
Sadly, one of our Rhode Island Reds died today. I've been doing my various bits of research to determine what could have caused it.
~24 months old (possibly older) Rhode Island Red. Healthy and laying up until yesterday.
She had been acting somewhat lethargic over the past 2 days; deciding to sit in the middle of the cool grass all day and generally not moving except for a drink or peck at her food. Today, same thing - resting in the middle of the grass in the backyard.
Several hours ago, I went back out to discover her with feet up in the air in the same spot where I left her with no apparent indication of an attack (cat, rodent, hawk, etc.) They have all been doing their dust baths recently - so checked them all for fleas. Nothing there. Being only 12 months into rearing chickens, I'm a little at a loss as to where to start? If 'old' age, fine. Just want to make sure that there isn't something systemic that can affect the other girls.
If someone can point me to one of a quick and easy 'dead chicken troubleshooter app' in the AppStore, that would be great. Failing that, a couple of rough pointers to get me started?
Thanks.
