a couple more questions

1. if you had to choose between ordering from Cackle or Meyer which one would you pick? has anyone ordered Dark Cornish from them?

and

2.if you order say 25 straight run then sell the roosters then hopefully find someone on here that has "quality stock" that are willing to sell a dozen hatching eggs - how long does it take to get a decent flock from hatchery females?

any help/advice would be appreciated.
thanks,
Junior

It's been an uphill run, trying to get some quality standard Cornish. I got a decent roo from a guy, he just had too many and gave me 3. Two were tall and gangly, the third has a nice body shape, so I kept him as a breeder. My only DC hen that I have left is a small, undersized DC hen from Murray McMurray. In that same order, I had some supposed pure bred Americaunas, but it was obvious by the time they were laying, that they are really just EE's, which are mutts. I will never order from them again. I had some scrawny, slow growing white rocks, too, from them. The birds are all healthy, but some are so far off-type for the breed they're supposed to be, I wonder how they can sell them as pure-breds with a straight face.

I think the ones I got were from Meyer stock, a few generations back. I think the folks he got them from had started with Meyer birds, and had been breeding to improve them. I've heard others say the standard Cornish from Meyer are good sized birds.

It's not the worst place to start, but keep your best 1-3 roos, for breeding, in case you don't find any better ones. Then while you're breeding to improve those, you can continue your search for some better ones. You might get lucky. Good luck, in any case.

If you are wanting DC's for meat birds you don't want SQ as they have been bred to the point of needing AI. I agree on getting good stock but not to the extreme. For a meat DC you are looking at grow out time, finish weight, laying ability and fertility.

Jenny,
thanks for the info and advice.i appreciate it.

Steve,
i'm not trying for show quality.i want a good flock of meat birds for my own use & to sell.the people who would buy them do not want a white chicken.
also, i checked out your website & it says you have Dark Cornish but your rebuilding your stock - check for availability. - when will you have some?

i really like the look of Dark Cornish buy i never guessed it would be so tough getting quality birds.i guess i might need to do a search on here and compare DC with the Buckeye.
has there been any posts on here compairing those two?

again thanks for all the help.i really appreciate it.
