I noticed a problem with one of my Easter Eggers beak about a week ago at 3 weeks old. Her beak doesn't seem to be crooked or crossed but unlike the other chicks she can't close her beak at all. I was wondering if it was possibly the beginning of cross-beak (scissor-beak)? Here is a profile and frontal picture of her beak along with one of the other EE's with a more "normal" beak. Pls let me know what you all think.

I'm not sure if this is even anything to worry about but I've raised 19 chicks so far and have never seen anything like this in any of their beaks.

Thanks in advance for any responses

looking at the 2 pictures of the normal one and the one not so normal look at the angle of the lower beak it doesn't have the slight curve that the other one does. almost looks like it has just a tiny tilt upward which makes the top part not fit right. Don't think it's scissor beak, maybe just a slight defect. does it eat and drink without any problems?

Hi Miss Lydia,
I've been closely observing her ever since I noticed that her beak was "different" and she kind of keeps to herself but when everyone else is done eating she does eat. Sometimes I'll take some of their feed and put it in the palm of my hand and she has a little difficulty eating out of the palm of my hand but it isn't too bad. She is also drinking but does it a little differently then the others. She won't dip her beak in and then look up and swallow... she just kind of dips her beak in and then shake off any excess water. I haven't seen her look up and "gulp" the water down like the other chicks do. She has been growing right along with the others which is a good sign.

I'm relieved that you don't think it's cross-beak, but at the same time I'm a bit concerned that her beak might get worse with time. I would hate to have to cull her if she can't eat or drink properly, but i can't let her starve to death either. I guess time will tell

I have a Millie Fleur with the same issue. Today she moved out the coop (She's 10 weeks old) and she now has stuff to wear her beak down on.
You may have to just trim her bottom beak from time to time. Or maybe it'll wear down once she has something to wear it down with.
That's my thought on the subject. I don't think you'll have to cull her.

Lets just hope that since she is doing good now with eating and drinking that she'll not have any problems in the future, like you said just keep a close eye on her to make sure she can eat and drink with out difficulty. I know with cross beak people give them deeper dishes so the can scoop their food and water, so might try that if you notice she starts to have problems, but hopefully she won't.

@ Miyashi I'm sorry that your chick has the same problem, but I am glad she is doing good at 10 weeks old! Thank you for the tip about trimming her bottom beak... I will keep an eye on her and if she has trouble eating and drinking I'll consider doing that. Thanks again

@ Miss Lydia Thank you for the kind words and the advice. Hopefully little miss Bibi (B.B. standing for broken beak lol

) will be okay. I will definitely try the deep dishes for food and drink if she has any trouble eating and drinking. I know that some people say you shouldn't name your chickens but I can't help it... we don't have any children so they are like my babies and I love em so much

My lil Elektra looks the exact same and shes 3-4 weeks old. How is your bibi doing? Just curious as to anything you've done with her or to help her. Thanks

Hi there.
I just wanted to let you know that the OP hasn't been online for a couple of years now so they may not respond.
