I cant decide whether I believe it or not but my sis swears that everytime she feeds my girls alot of scrap veggies something good happens. She fed my girls a ton of lettuce and the next day i got an egg. And then yesterday she fed my girls a TON of squash and my layer laid a HUGE egg! It is twice the normal size...is her theory even possible??

I think so. My EE's started laying at 17 weeks old and everyone said that was so early for an EE. My girls get all kinds of scraps. The just love raisins. They get scraps of some sort a couple of times a day. They love all kinds of veggies, i peel most of the veggies, like cucumber and mellon. They love corn on the cob and tomatoes. I also let them free range for a couple of hours each night and they just love it. I think a happy chicken is a good egg laying chicken.

I think it's true, too. I fed my chickens a mess composed of vanilla just slightly expired yogurt, organic crackers I found at the grocery marked down super cheap, blueberries forgotten in the back of the fridge, and some leftover corn and mashed potatos. I got five eggs the next day and one was a triple yolker!

I am going to try to feed them good stuff and let them out of the run into the yard--they are in love with the grubs in the compost pile, so that's a win/win.

They won't eat apples, however. Which is unfortunate, since we have a bazillion apple trees around here......

I think better food and more variety equals better laying not just more food. Convincing them to eat more layer feed isn't going to help much. Feeding them more greens, bugs, and other protein sources can make them healthier and lay better.
