i have a pond with little fish for mosquito larve and a friend said to throw some to my girls. he also said i could give them the water hyacinth and water lettuce to pick through the rootballs. has anyone else done this? since chickens couldnt normally get to these water plants are they safe? Mahalo in advance for your wonderful advice!

I feed mine minnows the size of guppies. They seem to love it and I haven't had an issue with feeding it to the flock. Just be careful though, once they figure out they're good to eat they'll swarm ya. LOL

The ornamental longtails are fed fish as a large part of their diet, so I don't see feeding them fish as an issue. Just make sure they have access to grit of some kind and I think they'll be fine. I wouldn't feed huge portions all at once. I usually just skim 10-20 minnows off the pond and split them between the 4 chickens. They learned to follow down to the pond after a few fish snacks. LOL
