) consider keeping coturnix quail. They fly *(hah) under ordinances' radar, and are quiet enough that even the boys' crowing sounds more like songbirds. They are charming birds. They are pretty and small, and start laying LOTS faster than chickens. They lay an egg a day, which, though tiny, are very delicious and packed with nutrients. (though I had to buy a pair of quail egg scissors to easily open them if I wanted something other than just boiled all the time).
