I ended up with 7 broody hens up until last week. They all hactched off their eggs except one. A first time broody left the nest with three chicks and left one egg that was pipping. With the Georgia heat it didn't hamper that final hatch and I found the chick just after it shed it's shell. I brought it in and put it under a lamp. Last night I tried to slip it in under a hen with chicks because all it did was fill my kitchen with ear piercing chirping. It went well until this morning. I couldn't find it anywhere.
Later in the day I went out and was talking to my son. Suddenly, I turned to see the chick making a beeline from under the steps straight for me. It heard my voice and came to find me. It ran circles around and over my feet. I bent down and it hopped into my hand.
We have our first house chicken. Meet Kitt.
I suppose it imprinted on me when I retrieved it from the nest.
