So, I love mottled birds... Are the houdans as nice as polish temperament wise? Are the crests as big, and how well do they lay? I have my flock of layers, so that isn't super important, but I don't want a breed that lays an egg a week either

I love my polish, they are some of the friendliest chickens I have next to my seramas. So, No polish haters allowed on this thread

Thanks for any info and pics you can provide!!

The houdans are not as flighty as the polish for me. I think they are just gorgeous. I am also partial to mottled birds and have mottled cochins as well. Houdans laid biggish white eggs daily for me until it got really cold. Then they stopped. They are not as friendly as my spitzhauben. Those hens like to be picked up : )

I really don't know that much about Houdans, I had one years ago that I got in a rare breeds special. Didn't seem to be to hardy of a bird. She lived to be old enough to lay but not long enough to know how well. They have five toes instead of four like the Polish.

I have had/have polish and I got houdans last year. I have to say the houdans hads became one of my favorite breeds. They have became such pets. I have a hen name Maude she rides on my shoulder when I feed. I just really like them. They are beutiful birds as well. As for laying I don't know in comparsion because I do not keep artifical light on mines so mines have not started to lay yet. I do like polish alot, but in comparsion MH get my vote. Also, it seems as if the Houdans are harder for some reason. I hope that helps.

The houdan definitely aren't as flighty as Polish. I think one of the reasons is their crests are not always in their faces. They really are my favorite bird out of my crested birds. Mine lay just about every day and only when it got below freezing for several days did they stop. They are now back to laying again. They also do not have the vaulted skull like the Polish which is a plus for some people.
