I have an almost 11 week old that I can't tell the breed on. I have narrowed it down and I think it's either an Ancona or a Mottled Java.

I may not know until I see an egg as the Ancona is a white egg layer, the Java a brown.

I'm leaning towards Java because of the legs.

She (I'm pretty sure she is a Hen) came from TSC. You can see pics at a 3 weeks old, 5 weeks old (2nd page) and 9 1/2 weeks old on my page.

I'll try to post the newest pics here...

PS. The chicks on my BYC Page that I think are Silver Duckwing OEGBs...they are aren't they???

Thanks everyone!!! Looks like she is probably a Java.

I am so bad at Combs. They have so much coloring to the side vs the OEGBs that are just straight up that I thought that was what made it more of a pea comb. Also the combs took so long to grow up at all I thought they were going to stay flat and wide.

Now they are growing up and look much more like a straight comb even from the two weeks since that picture.

Now once my Delawares get here (June 17th) my flock will be complete for this season...of course they'll be babies so they won't be joining in for a while.

Next season I'll be a lot smarter about picking my breeds etc for the size and quantity of eggs I want.

Next season you should be able to use the birds you have now

Most of us don't change our birds every year, or even every couple of years. Birds will lay for many years if you let them. I have a girl who is almost 8 and she lays regularly.

I do add birds now and again to my layer flock, but I do it one or two at a time. In facet I'm adding some cuckoo marans next week

I agree, I'm going to keep all of these from this year. Unfortunately most if not all of the birds I got this year don't lay the size egg I'm going to need.

In my ignorance I thought all standard sized birds laid similar size eggs and you got med-large eggs depending on the hen. So I reached into the TSC standard straight run bin and took my chances.

What did I get??? OEGBs...which will lay almost quail size eggs and must have been in the wrong bin.

White Cochins which will lay a small egg and one Mottled Java which will lay a medium egg.

Because of this I ordered 3 Delawares that will get here in the middle of June and start laying in the fall. I need the large eggs for baking. I have Celiac Disease and since I'm already baking without wheat, I can't risk the protein difference in the egg adjustment (using 2 small vs 1 large etc).

So, that said, I've got some wonderful babies I wouldn't give up for anything...they eat the bugs which I got them for originally and they will lay beautiful eggs for scrambles, omlets etc.

I have room in this coop for up to 25 chickens, so I'll be getting more next season, probably the Delawares.

My opinon is that it is a mixed breed, sorry!!! And just to let you know tsc is not a good place to go get chicks!!!!!!!!!
