Moulting in dead of Winter...what the???

It is now late January, and half of my flock are recovering from their moult. It makes zero biological sense to me to moult during the worst possible time. All my birds are healthy, uncrowded, free-range, draft-protected, etc. Any guesses?

I've wondered the same thing. All other creatures are adding fur and fat... but not chickens. No, those crazy critters are shedding!

Haha I know. I noticed yesterday all of mine are just now starting to moult. They look awful!

Ive got a poor ol' B.O that is as bald as a side of ham right now. Ive never had one moult this late before.

I have two in moult. I think they are getting ready for spring laying perhaps?
