You hang it low enough that it is chest high to the smallest chick. It is good if they have to stretch a bit to eat. The hanging feeders without a lid make no sense to me, but that's how they make them. Take a plastic lid and cut slots so you can secure it to the handle with which you hang the feeder.

I put a pie tin on mine for a lid and set the whole thing on a a 12"x12" brick thingy. Seems to do the job pretty well.

Thnx! You both make me feel so much better...I wondered what I was missing

Hanging the feeder worked...they stopped roosting on it...I think as no more poop on it or in it...maybe the swinging motion made them stop roosting on it....
I raised the 2 gal. waterer on a concrete block and and put it in the opposite corner of the light... maybe raising it worked as now there is not pine shavings or poop in it...
The 14, one month old chicks love their new coop... I wish I knew how to post photos on the BYF...I guess I am still too new????

Our farm store sells the lids to the feeder for $7.99. Ridiculous! So i went to GoodWill where they have a TON of mismatched lids for .99 a piece. I found one I thought was the closest and it ended up fitting like a glove over the top of my feeder. Worth the trip. I don't like it exposed either.

I had a 4 week BR get stuck in the feeder. I don't know how long the poor thing had been in there but I fished it out and put it beside the water and it drank and drank. It must have been there for awhile. Now I put duct tape over the top. I do like the lid idea! It should work for the "roost on the water thing. Thanks for the idea!!!!
