Moving 66+ chickens...

i second the card board box idea. you can get a lot of them from your local grocery store. cereal and paper goods boxes would work well.

Unless those chickens are world record, small, miniatures, 66 ? chickens aren't going to fit into a small car. Come on! You'd have to call Ripley's Believe It or Not or Guiness Book of Records or something.

I've hauled a dozen hens, in boxes and that is less than 1/5 th the number here. Truly, a van, panel truck or trailer is going to be needed to do this move in one swoop. I assume there is furniture, clothes, appliances and hopefully, chicken equipment also making the move. There's got to be a truck involved here somehow.

I'm going to see if I can make a layered cage w/solid bottoms, 2-3 layers for the backseat and passenger. Only one layer for the trunk.
I'll see if we can use the rental truck, but I know they charge for it to be dirty, damaged, smelly, etc. Idk, I'd still need to MAKE a cage for them. Don't have a bottom for the dog cage, but its too small anyway.

I would just use the U-haul and hose it out once you're done. The image of someone driving around with a car full of 66 chickens is making me LOL
I can just picture someone getting pulled over with file boxes full of chickens and trying to explain it to the officer.

Cardboard boxes, animal carriers, believe me, it would be worth it, less hassle and less mess.

Yes UHaul companies are not appreciative about having animals loose in the back of the truck. Most of the trucks have wood walls and metal floors. Not a pretty sight!

Box them!

I think you would spend a whole lot less on that extra tank of gas than you would have to spend to replace half your birds after you cram 60+ chickens into a car that small. Just use the rental truck or make more than one trip. Sometimes you just have to spend the money.

most states actually have laws about animals being "free range" or loose inside a moving vehicle. IE in RI even dogs need to be tied or crated otherwise you can be fined or even arrested, because its a danger to the driver and the people near him/her.

my uncle moved his flock of 50hen 5roos in file boxes in a uhall trailer from Maine to RI, almost 6 hours at night, he got them into the file boxes by stacking them on their sides, and putting them where the girls usually nested at night, of course that left the roosters to be chased down but, he got them.

This is what I'm thinking, too. Even if your car only gets 12mpg, (and if it's a car I sure hope it gets more than that), you're talking about less than $10 for a round trip.
