We are moving at the end of the month and will be taking our chickens and rabbits on a 500 mile journey. Our load will consist of:
6 hens
2 rooster
18 Cockerals
2 CX hens
20 pullets
11 doe NZW
2 buck NZW
Unknown amount of kits

I'm looking for ideas. I'd be interested in hearing what others have done to move their animals.

Thanks

I moved about 600 miles in '08 during July. I did the trip mostly at night because of the heat. For the most part, chickens can be packed pretty tight as they will not move around much anyway. Any problem birds, like roosters that want to fight, can be boxed alone. During daylight hours, you should try to find shady spots when you stop. Unless they get too hot, chickens won't require water or food during transit. Put down some hay for traction. If they ride in a trailer or box truck, ventilation can be a problem. That's a really large number for a move. I would try to cut down on the numbers as much as possible. Hard to imagine the truck or trailer that can handle that many fowl and all the other stuff required for a move. Good luck to ya........Pop

Thanks. Glad to here someone else has done the same thing. We have cut down significantly our numbers of chickens and stopped breeding our rabbits. I've been thinking about renting or borrowing a livestock trailer to through everything in. Luckily we have friends and family willing to pitch in.

Thanks again
