We are new to raising chickens and we are getting our babies from my father-in-law. There are 2 hens sitting on eggs and have for the last 2weeks or so. Can we move mom and babies right after they hatch? Or do we have to wait until they are older?

Found 2 more hens sitting on eggs today at my in-laws. We have everything ready for our instant flock (practically). Lots of eggs. They are easter eggers as far as we know haven't seen my step mother-in-law to ask if there is another breed.

I have moved mom and chicks with no problems. Momma tends to want to be where her chicks are. I always let her see the chicks as we are moving them bu it may not matter. That is just me.

Sounds like you are doing great......

There is nothing sweeter than atching a hen care for her babies..............
Thanks for sharing.......
Also, my experience has been that I have moved hens sitting on eggs and they did fine...I was just careful to lift the whole nest....Mom and eggs.
Have fun

Gather all the babies in a basket/bowl and carry to new spot WITH mom right beside them, watching/seeing them all the way... maybe wait a day... nobody moves much the first day and it is bonding time with the little wigglies under her tummy.

One of the hens has been sitting for almost 3 weeks and has her nest in a well protected area that makes it difficult to move the whole nest. His chickens are free ranging and roost in the barn. I just found a nest without a mum today because something got her and she was laying near the door to the chicken coop.

We have babies!! I went to check on the hens on Saturday and thought perhaps one of the hens looked fluffier than before. So I was thinking maybe some babies were hatching! I just got home from work about an hour ago and my husband told me we got 7 new chickens! Our mum who has been sitting on the eggs for a little over 3 weeks has hatched her babies! There is 6 peeps. I haven't seen them yet, because mum was protecting her babies. I'll see if I can get some pictures tomorrow!
1 other mum at my in-laws is sitting on her nest and is stuck like glue. She's probably a week or so behind the other hen. There is one more who has only been sitting about a week. Just need to wait for her to hatch her babies!
