To All you chicken folk that live in very warm climates.-HELP
I live in Arroyo Grande Ca. it's very cold and foggy. We will occasionally
have a warm to hot day and my chickens really suffer. In fact last heat wave I lost my black cochin rooster, which was my dear pet(they all are pets).

How do you keep cochins in all that fluff cool?

Yes, your girls will definitely be affected by the change. Don't even bring them here unless you can provide them a lot of shade.

I use a mister and put a small plastic wading pool under the mister to catch water so they can hop into it if they want. Some folks even freeze plastic bottles of water and put one into their waterers. You might want to put a fan into their coop because even our nights tend to be warm. Also, you might add some electrolyte to their water if they appear really stressed.

Some cities in higher elevations like Flagstaff and Prescott don't have the degree of heat the lower desert areas have, so depending on where and the time of year you move, your girls might adjust with no problem.

Best of luck

Thanx for your input.
We used to live in Flagstaff but we didn't have chickens at the time.

My chickens are my pets so they have to come with.
We may wind up in the valley around scottsdale.
I may need to put a swamp cooler in the coop?

Your in the Verde Valley? Your closer to Sedona then.

Do you have cochins?

I am from AZ. I have lived in Flagstaff, Sedona, and most recently Tucson.

My advice if you haven't picked out a place is find a place with good shade trees. Cottonwoods, Sycamores are nice, and in Tucson we had some Chinese Pistache trees that were WONDERFUL! Trees make much more comfortable shade than any man-made roof. We never had chickens in AZ though.
