we are moving to a town that does not allow chickens. Grrrrr. I'm not giving up my babies! How do you get around this? We will have only 1 neighbor but they are only 10 feet from us. We bought a 1830 house. The problem is it's in the center of town The other neighbor in a business. behind us is county land. We are on a 300 foot lot I have 12 bantams & 2 standards. What kind of coop should I build? How big? They have never been in a "coop" before. I will give up my standards if I have to, but the bantams are my daughters she has raised them from eggs. She's 8.

Perhaps a playhouse converted into a coop with a closed in run. Do you have a privacy fence...that would help ??

Of course roosters would be a no-no since crowing gives it away.

Good luck !!

Talk to your neighbors, if they don't mind no-one will report you. It's not like there are officers patrolling the streets looking for chickens. Here the legal limit is 3 hens, but I know people with more and with roosters too, because their neighbors don't mind. If they hate the idea of chickens, maybe you could keep them indoors? "House" pets are usually not regulated.

PS: free eggs are always good bribes.
