We have a 9 wk old blue cochin that was bit by a snake three weeks ago...thankfully she was able to get away, unfortunatly her leg was hurt in the scuffle and now only uses one leg, she hops around fine, and will get up to eat and drink but as for day in day out she finds a soft spot of ground and sits. DF doesn't want to take care of it, I think he may think that one day the chick will magically walk on two feet. But I know this is no way for the poor thing to live. The down side of this all is that we bought 3 of them sr and the other two are roosters. I think thats another reason DF has such a problem with "putting her down" so to speak. Any suggestions, she isn't in any distress, eating and growing like she should, in a way that she has adapted to. Any opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.

PS she was named by my nephew...Ms. HurtLeg... him and his silly names

maybe just let her be.. she eats and drinks and doesnt seem to be in pain .. maybe she will just get along..

JMO..

As young as she is she will adapt, I know of two birds that are living well on just one leg. I wouldn't run her with a rooster though as he may injure her further trying to mate.

thank you, thats what I wanted to hear, I don't want her to suffer, but I don't want to lose her if I don't have to, she's such a beautiful bird.

I would think she'd be fine. I have a RIR hen that hurt her leg, and she hops around on one and is fine, she eats and drinks.
I think your chicken should be fine, just let the leg be and it should eventually be okay, the chicken will adapt to it.
Good luck

In the future if you want to breed her you can use artificial insemination. Yes they do that for chickens too. there used to be a vhs tape available from McMurray on showing birds and it had that info in it.
