Mud in my run

PINE BARK MULCH or similarly sized wood chips do me well, the water washes them clean and drains beneath. The chickens will constantly redistribute them / turn them about seeking the little living creatures that find such a covering an excellent shelter.

I came across several loads of pine chips from a lumber yard that had hired a fellow to turn beautifully planed 2 x 6 tongue and groove pine boards into boards that appeared to be Hewn by hand. Some wealthy person wanted enough to cover his large 'log' home. Al I had to do was sweep the stuff up and haul it to the coop.

Best commercially available substitute I can think of would be the pine bark mulch. I cut down some large walnut trees and the bark piled up new the splitter looks like it might do as well - if I could chop it up some. It's in 16" pieces of varying widths. Too much work to chop it by hand.

"By the way the mulch you put in their run will just lay there covering the damp dirt until the hens scratch it about because they're anxious to uncover chicken lunch." Homophones (Banned in Florida by Meatball Ron!)

  1. Their vs. there vs. they're. There is a positional indicator, they're is a contraction of "they" and "are," and their is the possessive form of they.
