I've read a few threads on here about the mud issue... and am aware of the "deep liter" method. Which I have been doing but apparently not deep enough. I have seen where some people build a screen type structure that keeps the chickens from getting to the ground (I think it might be called a grass protector). In my mind I'm thinking this is a win-win... keeps them out of the mud, and once grass gets established again it gives them something to snack on. Does anyone have any other thoughts on this...What if I covered the entire floor with it (run is 12'x16')?

Grazing frames.
Where that photo came from, I think:

Not a long term solution.
If you have drainage issues, this won't solve them and plants might not grow in the mud(too wet soil) anyway

Could be a maintenance nightmare, they eventually get clogged with poop and thatch and need to be 'cleaned' out.

Would be tricky for you to walk in run.

The mesh can be hard on their feet, toe injuries and/or cuts that could become infected(bumblefoot).

I've used them they are cool, but more litter materials was the best solution in the long run for me.
1/2" hardware cloth for grass-like leaved plants(sod and grains)

1 x 2" fencing for larger leaved plants.

When fresh planting seed I stack a second frame on top until roots are established or they pull the whole plant out.

I like the one at the top best and am converting the others over.

Ripped a half inch off the 2x4's and used it to cover mesh edges to avoid cut feet and subsequent infection (bumblefoot).
