Mulched up stump

Hi all! We're wrapping up our chicken run and I have builder's sand on order for the floor of it. We had an oak stump ground out recently and there's a big pile of the resulting mulch in my front yard--I assume this is usable for my chicken run? Or is it too splintery?

Sorry if this is a dumb question; I'm new and don't want to introduce anything dangerous or harmful, and I appreciate the wisdom and experience found here.

The wood chips from the stump will be fine but I'd never mix it with sand. I just use wood chips that I get for free at a local highway department.

They collect curbside brush and run it through a chipper.
