Murder in my yard again

It's the dog owners fault. I'd be sending them a bill.

I would also say that you should not count on them to be diligent. Put up your own fence. They are completely in the wrong, but your birds are going to continue to pay for the dog owner's negligence.

Yeah, it's really their fault. THEY are responsible for keeping THEIR dogs in THEIR yard. There are property lines between houses for a reason. They need to know about what their lack of responsibility has caused. Take care of the problem.

Sadly, you should remember this and keep some sort of fencing in thier. Take evidence down, call the people who can take care of this mess, and don't let it go. Make sure the owners know you mean business. It doesn't matter if they are only chickens. Point is, the dog has to be on it's own land. Don't give into excuses. There is no denying the truth.

Your birds are not replaceable. Unfortunately, neither are bad neighbors that won't move.

Tell the neighbors that the next time their dog is on your property you will shoot it. It is perfectly within your rights to do so and where I come from it would be expected. I had a pair of huskies kill 15 of my chickens one day. They got away before I could do much. Surely enough they came back in the evening two days later. When I went outside one of them lunged at my 3 year old daughter. I put her inside, got the shotgun and killed them both on the spot, then called my neighbor to come remove the bodies. Dogs on your property killing anything is a serious matter. Ignorant dog owners shouldn't have dogs in my opinion.

"Murder in my yard AGAIN"

Your birds paid the price of you not protecting them from your neighbor's dog.

It is each of ours responsibility to make sure that our pets are safe from preditors on our own property.

If it wasn't the dog that already killed at your place, it would be or could be any other preditor.

I hope you don't lose any others.

People can't always have the perfect fence due to cost, zoning, etc. There are pros and cons to free ranging. The birds are happier, there are far fewer bugs in the yard and the feed bill is a lot cheaper. There is also the risk of predators. The majority of wild predators only kill what they need and are much more of a problem at night. Saying that it's the chicken owner's responsibility and not the dog owner's just is not true. The law bears that out. That's why almost every jurisdiction in the country has laws that require animal owners to keep their animals on their own property or under their control. Hold dog owners responsible. If they can't keep their dog on their own property, then they shouldn't have the dog. A dog in it's own yard is a pet. The same dog in somebody else's yard killing chickens is a predator and should be treated as such. Personally, I would make a report with the sheriff's department or police department. Even if they don't issue a ticket, there will be a record of it. Then send the dog owner a bill. They obviously haven't learned their lesson because this isn't the first time it happened. If it costs them money, they just might become better guardians of their animals. If they don't pay, take them to small claims court. It's a myth that small claims collection is difficult. It's pretty easy. Even if they apologize and swear it won't happen again, just remember - that's probably what they said last time too. If they have so little disregard for your property, they aren't good neighbors and they really aren't your friends either.
