I consider them decent layers, they do turn off for a few months, but ducks are seasonal layers. Do they brood?

the better question would be when do they not? they can drive one batty trying to discourage the practice. Yes, they are well known for being broody, and usually are good mothers but that varies of coarse.

Honestly, i'd almost say their broodiness can be a slight disadvantage of the breed as you have to keep on your toes if you don't want young.

I should mention though Muscovy are NOT mallard derived so if they breed with a duck other than a muscovy the young will be mules(sterile)

I was thinking about getting some Muscovy ducks myself but it won't be till next year I wanna add more fencing to my property and and finish filling in the back of the yard with fill dirt and then build a nice home for them. My dogs who are terrier type mixes do an awesome job of keeping predators away so I want to make sure I can build a nice secure home because my dogs are necessarily mean but they rough house. In fact only one of our three cats can keep up with them. This is really good information.

Forgot to mention muscovy duck fly, and i mean full flight in the air types, you can clip, i choose not too but we're rural and they free range but this is to be taken into consideration especially in a more populated living area.
