Muscovy Hen Weeding Out Eggs

I think the drake took the first step. During dinner, he decided to fly into the backyard and come knock on the sliding glass door by us....over and over and over. My son is out there now trying to put him away (figuratively speaking, of course) but he seems intent on hanging around us. I sometimes think he sees his reflection in the glass and get's himself all worked up. :-)

hahaha aweeee. he wants to be friends!!! my drake made friends with the other duck that followed him in the mirror lol

Just a quick update to mention that all but two of our eggs have hatched into beautiful baby boys and girls (save for the one that didn't make it out of the shell alive). She still insists on sitting on the last two eggs, so I just left them there for now. I'm not sure if it is possible that the last two can hatch, but I decided to leave them there rather than pull them out and mess around with them.

I'm guessing there are 10-12 babies in there, but they are all but invisible under mommy's feathers so it's hard to tell. She doesn't have any desire at all to have me in there, but the five-finger oven mitt has helped a great deal. :-) (Until my wife asked where it was tonight - oops!) Hopefully in the next day or so it will warm up a little and they will start venturing out.

I did hold one of the ducklings to show my wife, who has always been a bit....tepid?....with my chicken (now duck) hobby. (She's actually in the other room showing our daughter a few pics right now :-) ) Anyhow, it was so cute! Walking back to the run, the little guy/girl tried to jump out of my hands, but tragedy was averted. What amazed me was that when I put it down, it darted about 18" to mommy's protection in about 1/2 a second. Very fast indeed!

Anyhow, I'll try to remember my photobucket account name/password so that I can upload a few pics.

D'Angelo N Va. :

Yeaaaaa!! Congrats!! That is Awesome!! I wish you lots of luck with them.

Thank you! I'm very excited, and can't wait to leave work each day so that I can race home and check them out. I did start another thread just to "introduce" them to the forum. :-)

This afternoon, the family was active out in their small run, eating and drinking and so forth, so I was able to remove a panel and access the nest. The two eggs leftover were very interesting, as one was twice as large as the other - easily - and was more grey looking. I decided to crack them open, so started with the first one, gently cracking the shell. I was just wondering if it ever got into development or was just 'an egg'. Well, it seemed to be the latter. The second one.....well, let's just say that when I cracked it, it didn't go "crack" it went "pop". Instantly the sulfur smell of rotten egg rose to my nose. I don't think I could have walked any faster to the yard waste bin than I did today.

Next time, if they haven't hatched in 24 hours, there will be no curiousity. :-)

Dave,

I just looked at your link...the babies are the cutest ever...I love the one with the mama the best...I want some so bad. I had some once and they were just sooooooo messy I swore never to get them again, but who knows....LOL..either way. I wish you the best of luck with them. And Thanks for the Great pictures.

oh and I have to say...I got the biggest laugh out of your story with the egg...WHEW..that is the worst smell ever. Ughhhh....I learned that long time ago when the chicken eggs would not hatch out. Curiousity killed my nose...LOL

I have one egg left from 8 that hasn't hatched. She kicked it out so I marked it and put in the nest next door. Do you think it's a bad egg or dead?
