OK. I don't know a whole lot about ducks but, I better learn quick because in three days my hen has layed 3 eggs. I want to let the hen set the eggs. Do I need to seperate the drake when she starts setting and how many eggs roughly will she lay before she sets? Also, what kind of treats can I give a duck that are good for her? I'm feeding her laying pellets but, I don't think they're getting enough protein and I don't want to buy different feed for just two ducks unless I have to.

i have a hen who has layed 11 eggs. lol. she's still not sitting.. uh she will sit when she's pretty for the most part. she won't lay till she has a clutch. i've read muscovies will lay 18-20 eggs per clutch. i would also get her oyster shell as a calcium suppliment. i have mixed oyster shell with my layer pellets. both my drake seems to like it too, it won't hurt him. there is a thread on here with a list of treats for ducks, but if you want your duck to lay good eggs, oyster shell is the way to go. i'm sure they will have it at a feed store. that's where i got mine along with a duckling buyer!

It might be a good idea to seperate her once she starts sitting if he continues to try and mount her while she is on the nest.. Eggs can get broken very easily if that occurs too much.
Drakes can also be a little rough and even kill ducklings once they have hatched.
Especially if this is her first time sitting- Im sure she woiuld appreciate being able to get down to the business of sitting and caring for her babies without the constant advances form the drake.
