I am thinking of getting 3 or 4 egg layers to put in my parents' backyard. We aren't allowed roosters in our city, so I'll only be able to get hens. I'm really new. Is that what I call them - chickens or hens? There isn't room to keep them until they are old enough to lay, so we wanted pullets. At least - going by what I've read - I would have to get day old chicks; get more than I really need (in case any die) or some end up being roosters... And I don't know how hard it would be to sell them once I am able to tell their sex.

Also, I just don't know where to start, when it comes to finding them.

Anyway, I am introducing myself here, then I am asking questions on a different board.

! Happy you joined us! Glad you are getting into the chicken game. BYC is a great place to research and pick up the know how you need. The first place to start is the Learning Center. It gives you what you need to know to raise and maintain poultry and addresses nutrition, housing, etc. Here's the link:

There are some places you can get P.O.L. (point of lay) chickens - that is they will lay soon after you get them. These are more expensive as you are paying for someone else raising them until they are a few months old. In terms of room, baby chicks (cheaper, lots of breed choice, easy to raise and CUTE!!) take up a lot less space then adult birds, so...

Here are some hatcheries/breeders where you can search out some birds to purchase:

A better option for you might be to connect with a local chicken keeper and purchase some birds directly. Find the OK thread in the link below and post there to see what fellow Okies have to say. Good luck to you and have fun on your chicken journey!
