As I was walking to my coop to close up for the evening, my rooster ran out 90 miles an hour towards me. No biggie, they all usually do this to greet me. But he immediately pecked the heck out of my foot drawing blood. So I kicked him because I was so surprised. Then he was trying to come after me again so I took my clog off and smacked the heck out him and jumped on our trailer losing my shoe in the process. I hobble back in the house to get help. My husband retrieved my shoe and snatched the rooster up by the feet while walking him back to the coop.

What are earth got into my rooster!?

What can I do to be prepared if this happens again? Any advice you guys can give me would be appreciated. This is my first flock. Thank you.

Yes, roosters do this. You and your husband handled it in completely the right way. Kick the heck out of him if he so much as drops his wing (starts to flirt) to you. Carry him in the presence of the other birds. Knock him off hens he is mating in your presence. (You are top rooster, no one mates a hen in the top rooster's presence.) Make him wait until all the hens are at the feeder before he can eat.

You need to nip this in the bud before he bloodies you or attacks a child. It is manageable, or if it isn't, the meanest roosters make the best soup. Good luck!! The worst roosters I've ever known were Polish, and they were finally rehomed for their actions.
