I wanted to start a diary of sorts to have pictures of these guys all in one place as they grow. These are our first ducks and oh we are in love. We started talking about getting ducks about a year ago now and just finally took the plunge. We have a friend who has anconas and has a broody mom on a large nest. We waited and waited for them to hatch by now it has been over the time they should of hatched but he will let her sit a few more days regardless. Anyway, we got impatient and picked up two Rouens, two Muscovies and a Pekin all on the day they hatched. We had hoped they would imprint or at least be calm. It seems four of the originals are very mellow and if not imprinted close to it. The Pekin really was a doll for the first few day and now he/she is a bit skittish.

Two days ago we got a lead on week old Ancona babies amd since that is what we really wanted we decided we had room for four. We picked up seven and will raise them all until they can be outside. Three will then go to a friend. The Anconas must be from different hatches as they vary in size a good bit. Two must be about the same age as my originals and the rest a bit older. They are so cute but so shy. I took everybody out in my garden to play today at the same time...it is fenced so I figured that way the skitty ones would be easy enough to round up. HAHA!

Not so much, I was trying to catch them without scaring them and making there be no chance of them liking me and well I got them all but it took a while...I didn't want to smoosh them or my thriving garden plants. Lesson learned...small temporary baby fence will be put up tomorrow so I can enjoy outside time with them and they cannot hide under my over five foot tall tomato plants. I'm sure it was a sight to see hehe.

So, I have introduced a few of the babies in random posts. But I would like to officially introduce them all :)

Meet my crew:

Wobbles the Muscovy

Willow the Muscovy

The original crew Muscovies Wobbles and Willow, Rouens Oakley and Pogo and Pekin Marshmallow

The Ancona's are not all named yet since I don't know who is staying. We call the big chocolate one chocolate pants haha and the little chocolate drinking is Petrie (Petrie is staying), The black drinking we call batman, the smallest black way back in the back is Little foot who is also staying, and the big light colored one is Luna and also staying.

Batman up front with another black with no name ( this ones head is a totally different color of yellow so I am curious to see if it ends up looking different)

They are adorable! I've never had ducks (just chickens so far) but I can see why people enjoy them so much. Keep us posted on how they are doing. Thanks for sharing the photos!

I enjoyed it too, thanks for sharing. of course Muscovy's are my favorite but I love all breeds of ducks especially the babies. Nothing cuter. Those are some adorable babies you have there. Now begin to train them to herd. walk slowly behind them with your arms out and guide them where you want them to go you can also use long poles but might be better to start with your arms so you don't scare them. once you get them where you want them then give them something special, mine love dried meal worms. ducks learn to herd easily so start them while young.

My Muscovies are just the sweetest! So loveable. After a while of being in the garden today all of the other ducks went foraging off on their own but Willow sat in my lap and Wobbles stayed right by my foot.

I will for sure start training them. That will be very important once they are free ranging.

Hi @stoneking929 , welcome to BYC and congrats on the new babies!

I need to personally round them up and kiss each one.

I know you aren't really supposed to kiss your poultry but how can you not? LOL

Some of the Anconas are really not very nice birds. We got them at about a week old (I maybe two of them were actually a week old and the others more like two or more). But they are hard to find and these ones came from a local place. Very well cared for. My original babies (two rouens, a pekin and two muscovies) are so outgoing At least I have them to kiss on ;)

I also rescued a baby ancona from a friends house. Mom put her nest in a bad spot and we found the only baby that hatched being hunted by a cat. So we nabbed her. She had just hatched that day. Well...I am officially a failed foster mom. This baby will stay here. She is just so attached to me.
