My Banty, Lucy has been ill all winter.
She ate 1 tablespoon of catfood which was contaminated with melamine.
She, of course, had to eat what the cat was eating and stupidly, I gave it to her. The cat died about 11 days later of kidney failure. Lucy went into her brooding box about 1/2 hour after eating it and stayed there for several months. I pulled her out three times a day and tried to interest her in water and some sunflower seeds and other proteins. Some days I just thought of putting her out of her misery. Her head hung over the side of the box and she just stared into space all day. Her comb shrunk to 1/5 it's orginal size and looked blueish-black and so did her wattle.
In the past week, she has slowly revived. She is eating again. She went outside (it is Spring here in Michigan, now, finally) and is digging in the dirt. Her comb and wattel are turning redder. Her BM's look regular and firm.
Now our problem is her toes and toenails. Her nails have grown very long and have twisted. I can imagine that walking is painful. Her perference is to sit on a pillow to relieve the pressure on her feet.
Can her nails be cut?
I have a photo of her feet but do not know how to upload it to this forum.
Any help would be appreciated.
ALSO. I READ SOMEPLACE THAT MELAMINE WAS ADDED TO CHICKEN FEED AND THAT CHICKENS HAVE BEEN RECALLED ON THE MARKET! I just hope hers doesn't have it in it. I am trying to feed her natural foodstufs: hamburger, fresh veggies (she likes green pepper) fresh corn, sunflower seeds, etc.
She lives in the house with me, my Greyhound, Rat Terrier (Terror) and my Siamese. She was mostly potty trained before this happened, going to the door to be let out to potty about three times a day. But right now that is out of the question. She lives in a parrot cage with an open door. We love her very much.
