My barred rock died today:(

Yesterday I brought my girls outside for the day and my barred rock seemed a bit odd, staying mainly under our deck.I figured she was just going to lay her first egg. It did look like her vent was a bit swallen when I looked after she died, I don't think I could have saved her as she didn't seem sick but it's so sad, she was just at laying age, not I only have 5 chickens

That's the bad part about chickens- they don't just get a little sick. They are well or at death's door, and there doesn't seem to be any middle ground. Sorry for your loss.

It's so sad, I want 6 hens but I don't know which way our new bylaw will work(4 hens or it could go 6). I guess I'll have to wait until next spring to get another chick She was my only barred rock.

I'm so sorry. I have only one Barred Rock, too, and she is so funny and friendly. It would break my heart if I lost her.
