I have two Silkies that when they go broody they don't growl when I come in. The realize that if I'm messing with them I'm giving them treats. I bring them their own bowl of yogurt, food, treats, etc. And they love it.

We had a mutt that I think growled a little bit but would shut up once she saw that it was me and I had treats.

How about you guys?

Mine aren't mean to me at all, I can pick them up (their bodies try to remain), etc.

My broody hen (speckled sussex) was a lamb when she was on the nest. She would let me pet her and pick her up. My one giant cochin hen was also very gentle but Isis the white one would take your hand off. All of our banty hens are fierce when it comes to their nest Even more so when they have babies to protect. lol One of our banty hens has just hatched two little chicks inside the male goat house. I tried to put a bowl of food in their and she came charging out at me like a rooster feet first. She even went after the poor ole goat who was just trying to get out of the rain.lol

It's funny how they are.

I better get off here. I hear Showgirls hatching in the bator and I really should move that broody into a private enclosure! I need to sell some Cochins so I can have a place TO move her!

Do you need any giant/standard Cochins? : >

I had a Mille that was the same way! She was so evil acting that my 9yr old daughter called her Satan when she was broody.

She was wicked mean! My other broodies will grumble a little, but nothing compared to the Mille. Tiny, but mighty!

Exactly! I have to man handle her to check eggs because if not she grabs my arm and wont let go, where as I just need to pick the other broodies up like I normally do.

My Banty mix doesn't growl, but she will fluff herself up as big as she can and she will bite and take your hand off if you try and touch her. I think it may have to do with me getting her at a year old from a livestock auction.

But all and all she is a good mother so I don't mind letting her raise some babies now and then.

My broody is wild from a farm. Never mind a finger, she will take my head off if Im not careful. She is a very good mama and really takes her "job" seriously. She hatched and raise 3 peepers to 6 weeks then laid and was broody again. Im expecting 3 more the end of the week.

None of my hens are broody - which I have complained about many times. However, broody or not my dark brahma hens growl at me if I get too close when they are on the nest. Lil' Bit, my sweet loving Lil' Bit, growls the minute I set foot in the coop. The growling is followed by bites if I get too close.
