My broody accepted two extra chicks but they haven't accepted her?

I think actually the one is doing better then the other but the other one doesn't really even follow (they only hatched out thurs) the bunch...there were 10 she hatched herself and one hatched late in bator ( one doing better with her)..the other was a helped hatch bc it shrink wrapped and has a tiny yolk that has now dried up and looks the size of a large piece of crumble food.

I guess I'm worried about that one making it altogether but it eats and drinks and was actually the spunkier one of the two when they were separate...I just keep checking on them and tucking it under her...luckily she doesn't mind but OH how I'll be scared to open that coop door tomorrow! It better be ok :/

has anyone had that happen? I think it was instinct?

If you wait too long to put chicks with a broody they may have a problem understanding what they need to do and that the broody is their care taker and heat source. I added a chick to a broody's clutch once and though she accepted it quite happily, the chick didn't see to know what to do with her. When I checked on them awhile after I found the chick dead. It was cold outside and the chick didn't crawl under mom for warmth like the others did. I had that chick indoors in a brooder for 4 days before giving it to the hen. I hope your chick will be o.k!

i like to sneak them in with the broody at night & as soon as they are fluffed up

MY EXPERIENCE Has taught me renegade peeps, left alone, find the brooding hen in a special cage that
allows them entry through a small hole perhaps 2" sq. on top/corner. As darkness falls "any port in the storm"
mentality prevails. Once they enter turn cage upright and by 48 hours they are friends. And will stick to
surrogate momma like glue!! This has worked a great many times for me.When it doesn't they disappear in to
the night never being seen again. By the way never thought to put dimmer on a heat lamp, good advice !! RR
