(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
This spring (2019) is my first time keeping chickens. It has been way more fun than i ever imagined. I originally decided on getting chickens about three years ago to help keep the bugs out of my raised garden beds. I opted for a chicken moat in order to accomplish this. So far it seems to work well.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 4 birds. I started out with eight but lost four ( less than 30 minutes) to our standard poodles when the gate was accidentally left unlocked by the kiddos. Im currently planning on installing "safe runs" in my chicken moat that are small enough for the chickens to fit through but too small for my standard poodles to fit through. I plan to add between four and eight more chickens in the next couple of months.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I currently have one Rhode Island red, two barred rocks, and an Americana. The ones that were lost to the poodles were a leghorn, a buff orphington, an Americana, and a black sex link.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I enjoy just watching the chickens interact with each other and watching my children play with them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I enjoy woodworking, home improvement, gardening, and problem solving.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am married to my wife of 13 years, have three children, one son and two daughters. We have two poodles (chicken killers), and my youngest daughter has two fish, which i seem to have been suckered into caring for.
In case you're wondering about the user name it's chicken + Steve mixed together, i pretty much knew that name wouldn't be taken.
7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC through Manterest (Pinterest) and have enjoyed learning from other people's experiences. I finally decided to join because i wanted to share my experiences, failures, successes, and lessons learned, keeping chickens so that others can learn from my mistakes and hopefully be successful in their backyard endeavors.
