I am so upset , she was the best hen ever! What did I do wrong ? She was fine 1 day and the next day when I let them out she looked a little funny and my rhideviskandcred was fighting with her I had to break it up! She was always the boss so I couldn’t understand it. Anyway her comb was kinda limp and she had a big piece of poop stuck to her bottom so I washed her bum and she went in the coop near the heater . I gave her water and food , the next day I went in coop and she was dead. Looked like she fell off roosting bar .. she was all cuffed up. I am so upset she was my pal .

Sorry that you lost your hen. Do you still have the body? Could you keep it cool, not frozen, and send it to your state vet for a necropsy? That would be the best way to find a cause of death. Chickens can suffer from reproductive problems, crop disorders, infections, heart, liver or kidney disease, and respiratory diseases. It would be hard to know what killed her without knowing her symptoms and a necropsy. Here is a good list of state vet to contact in NJ:

thank you.❤️

Oh no!! That's a shame. I'm so sorry that you lost your pal. Don't beat yourself up as it wasn't necessarily anything you did....after all, you kept her healthy and happy for 4 years! I know you'll miss her.....:hugs

She was 4

It happens.

My daughter's all-time-favorite hen died suddenly at age 4. I recall giving the girl a once over, commenting to her how nice her comb color was and how soft her feet were, and how much healthier she looked than the younger birds... and the next morning she was dead (heart attack?).

I'm sorry for your loss. <3

Depending on where you are, and $, consider getting a necropsy for peace of mind.

It was to late I had buried her ..she was such a sweetheart. I know I probably sound crazy, but you get so attached and just feel like there was something I could have done..
