I noticed one of my girls was not eating the other day and yesterday morning I found her in the coop dead. What happened? Should I be worried about the flock? Am I giviing them too much corn (just a little 2-3 times a day)? She showed no outward signs of trouble. She looked healthy. She was a nice white leghorn. Help! This is the first time I had a dead chicken in my flock.

I am sorry you lost your hen. Sometimes they just die for no obvious reason. Could have been anything from eating something poisonus to an internal problem. As long as the majority of her diet was a balanced layer ration a little corn shouldn't effect them at all. I know my birds love it when I throw a little out to them as a treat

So sorry about your hen. How old was she? You should post this under the emergencies/disease/sickness section. You might have received more help there.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't realize there are other sections. I am still learning how to get around this sight. I think she was a chicken who was eggbound last year that I nursed back to health. She probably just never fully recovered. I'll learn how to get around this sight better. Thanks so much. Have a great holiday.

When you have chickens a long time you will find some just drop dead for no apparent reason. There will be no out ward signs. Some just have a heart attack and die. Sorry for your loss. If you plan to keep raising chickens you will have it happen again. I doubt the corn had anything to do with it. I would watch how much you feed if any when it is hot other wise corn is great when it is cold out for extra energy.

Yes,it could bed anything they are pre-disposed to - stroke, heart attacke, liver/kidney disease It may have nothing to do with what you are doing at all, so please don't beat yourself up about it. I had a RIR die of an apparent stroke one day. She had even laid an egg earlier that day. She was less than a year old

I recently found a silkie hen dead in my coop. I took her in for a necropsy and she had cancer. She was perfectly healthy as far as the eye could tell. She ate, drank, looked good then....dead. I'm sorry for your loss. Without a necropsy you will never know. I took mine in so I would know whether or not to worry about disease.
