Hi there,

I have recently bought three new hens with no cockrel early today one of mychickens laid an egg and now won't get off it when I try to collect it. Is this normal? Do I need to force my chiken off?

It sounds like your hen may be broody. That's where they want to hatch eggs and be a mommy. If she spends the night on the nest instead of roosting in her normal spot, she is probably broody. I make sure my broodies spend two nights on the nest before I give them eggs to make sure they are broody.

It is not sure she is broody. Sometimes hens will act like that anyway, but it does sound like her being broody is a strong possibility.

You need to collect the eggs every day. They are still good to use. Even if they were fertile, you could still use them if you collect them once a day. Sometimes long sleeves and gloves makes it less painful to check under a hen.

If she is truly broody you have two choices. You can break her and get her laying again. This thread might help if you want to do that.

The other option is to find her some fertile eggs and let her hatch them. You might find fertile eggs by talking to the people at the feed store. Somebody there might know where to get some. You could maybe go in your State thread in the "Where am I? Where are you?" section in this forum and hopefully find someone close that might have eggs.

If you find fertile eggs and decide to let her hatch, get back with us for help.

Good luck!!! and once again, :frow
