[caps off] Okay, I went out to feed them, in the morning and only the one with the hurt leg was in the coop (it hurt it yesterday and I don't know how).... I swear a lot... so... what?!?!?! They hardly ate their food.
I look under the coop-ramp, but there's not enough room for 7 chickens. I walk around the backyard but I don't even hear them.
I'm worried.
I walk out front and find one, in the neighbor's lilac. I chase it a bit and we have have a good time running around the side yard and the Rhode Island enjoys leading me around and I pretend not to be embarrassed as I do my Rocky Balboa impression and show off the top 3" of my Fruit of the Looms, while squat/walking/sprinting, until I not-so-gently squash the hen into the corner of the fence. Hip-checked her into the boards. I grab her. Pant a few times. For show. Then unceremoniously toss her over the 6' fence, into the back yard. She commits a small indiscretion, in the tulips and gets on with her morning.
I found another one, in the shed, under the deck. That one has always been the leader. That makes 3 out of the 8. Five missing!!!!!!
None of the others were anywhere to be found. They were not in the trees or under the cars. Not under the tomato plastic or in the neighbors' yards.
When I got home from work, the other five were in the pen doing the chicken-impression of "innocent looks" that whisper "I don't know what you're talking about officer. It was like that when I got here.". I know that look. I have practiced that look, in the mirror. It can say things like "Hey man, I don't know this woman." Or "I didn't know she was your daughter." Or "These? These aren't mine."
Do chickens just take off? Did I get a bunch of migrating hens? What the heck happened? I worried all day, at work. I thought of asking my boss, but he looked like he was under a lot of pressure. He has chickens and knows about them.
Are my chickens up to something? How do you even know? They have the best poker face, in the world. Giddy? Suicidal? Could be either one. No way to tell. Based on their total lack of food consumption, it seems like they were gone most of the night.
I'm stumped and feel like I am going to be checking on them all night.
