I'm so happy I never bought these little buggers with the intent to slaughter because I'm already attached to them at 2 weeks old!!! I seriously doubt I would be able to slaughter anything I raised. I know people that do and I'm not hating on it whatsoever, it's survival. I'm hoping one day I will be able to because I will know they were loved, extremely well cared for animals. How do you detach emotionally from these creatures yet still give them love?

Glad you're enjoying your chickens!

Sometimes when a chicken (duck, goose, etc.) is injured or sick, people have to make the decision to put them down. It's either that or let the animal suffer with no hope for recovery. When it's a pet, that's a very hard decision to make and emotionally draining (been there, done that).

And not everyone raises their birds as pets, but as part of living a self-sufficient life style. They provide good care to the flock with the intent on using them as a food source so maybe they aren't attached to them in the same way as they would be a pet.

People get into raising animals for lots of reasons, the important thing is that the animal is humanely for.

That's my view point anyway.

You're so right. I've been looking into it more and I probably will one day raise meat chickens! I think my form of slaughter would probably be gassing...what are your thoughts on that?

Honestly, I haven't thought a lot about how to do that. I've never raised meat birds but would guess everyone has their preferences for one form over another. You might check out the meat bird forum and read up on what people have to say about the various ways of butchering.
Meat Birds ETC

When I get to that point (which could be a long time from now), that's what I'll do. And then I'll talk to my husband about how he wants to do it, because I can't see doing it myself
