I have raised meat chickens for 5 years. Two years ago I decided to keep some for eggs. I have 6 Barred Rock hens which give me 4-6 eggs every day. In March I decided to get a few more since I was not sure how long hens would lay well. I purchased 9 new hens: 3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 Issi Whites. I have an 8 foot square raised coop with a very large yard for them which is fenced and netted on top. I have 4 dogs which prevents me from letting them free range.
I started raising eggs layers to have eggs for my autistic grandson who needs to put on weight, is a picky eater but loves scrambled eggs. I also am raising my yearly Cornish Rocks for meat chickens. I keep them 6 weeks and then process them. I am a partially retired, hands-on grandma. I walk to work at a metal recycling business owned by my husband and brother. My husband built a chicken plucker last year which we only used at the end of season.
